So, I'm humbled. I just went to the Q&A session with Nancy, championing her right to an equal preaching opportunity, only to find out that she is the one who initiated all those changed. She doesn't agree with women speaking to mixed audiences, and almost didn't accept the invitation to speak at Founder's Week at all. Hmmmm....now I don't know what to think. I don't know how to hold the tension of being a woman preacher in a conservative context. How do you speak for yourself and preach the Word of God without driving a rut between yourself and the conservative traditions you find yourself in? I do believe that women can preach to mixed groups as long as they are ultimately under the authority of the Church, which is under the authority of God. I do believe God has called me to preach, and particularly to women. But what about that tag-along husband? What about a woman like Nancy being asked to speak at Founder's Week? What of that? Isn't it more "submissive" (to use the term loosely) for her to accept the invitation and preach as her "authorities" have asked her to?
No idea...
