Most of the time, the wrath of God is kind of an annoying topic for me. It's immature, I know. But, if I'm honest, I don't know what to do with it. Wrath seems unloving, unwelcoming, uncomfortable. I mean, it's wrath. God's not just upset and tapping His divine foot in the kitchen while standing over an open cookie jar while analyzing the crumbs on the floor. He's not just angry after being woken up by the garage door opening and rolling over to see that the clock clearly says that it's after curfew.
No. Our God is filled with holy wrath over sin. And let's be honest, that sounds a bit drastic doesn't it? It sounds a little over the top.
But think about it…. God is filled with wrath over sin. And isn't that wonderful? It's not wonderful for sin or those who insist on loving it and living in it. But it is a fantastic and glorious reality for those of us who are hurting in sin or by sin or have been wounded by another's sin or who fight sin or, well, anyone who's experienced the consequences of it. Because He hates it and wars against it and releases His wrath against it…and that means He's in our corner.
So, Jesus, keep your wrath with sin hot forever. Don't ever come to terms with it, don't ever come to a place of peaceful cohabitation with it. Because some day I want to live in a place completely free of sin and all it's effects, and You're the only One who can do anything about it. So, please, deal with sin in furry and wrath and hatred, because otherwise we have no hope.
