Today was the first day of classes for us in the schools we were assigned. For most, they went really well. Tricia wasn’t able to teach, but sat in classes all day. she starts teaching on Wednesday officially. Bethany started, but only had two classes. Her other periods are reserved for counseling, but students haven’t been selected for that yet. The need for counseling is very high, she realized. One of the 5th grade girls works for a 7th grade boy who is her pimp. Can you imagine. Tasha was remembered by all the students from the Day of the African Child, and they were thrilled that she would be teaching them.
Jason sat in on classes all day and then met with the Scripture Union (a Bible club that is being revived at the school). In his words, “It’s good to know you’re right where God wants you to be.” Alex taught all day and said it went “fine” (he wouldn’t be Alex if he had given more description. Haaha).
Then there was my day. Oh goodness. Haaha…
I felt like Anne Shirly all day; uncertain, frustrated and just beyond having control of her students. First, I read my schedule wrong, and I thought I was supposed to be there 4th period. I was supposed to be there third. Oops. Thankfully, Monday schedule is different (which I also didn’t know) so I didn’t really miss it. Then I walked into the boys bathroom. Oops, again. Then I taught a whole class without telling them my name. I also taught a whole Life Skills class the Moral/Religious Studies lesson. It would be me. Seriously. Haahaa!
Please pray that we get better at teaching and know how to correct the students. I’m the same age as many of the guys I’m teaching and they started making sexual gestures yesterday and I’m very limited in disciplining that, but I have to find some way. That’s just not acceptable. Pray that we would be teachable teachers. We’re finding that to be a huge struggle.
Also be praying for our safety. On my way to school, a soldier tried to pull me into his truck. I was so unprepared for it. It was 9 am and the streets were busy, so I thought nothing of him pulling over in front of a store that I was walking past. But he pulled right into the open doorway on the passenger side of his truck. I praise God nothing happened; He has been so good to us. We continue to pray. And we’re going to buy knives for all us girls to carry today. J
I am totally praying for your protection! Not only for your physical protection, but that the Lord would be moving Satan out of the way so that His light would be made known through your entire team! Greater is He that is in you than the one of this world. I love you all and miss you a lot!
